Beyte Saar.
Beyte Saar was born in 1926.
Raised in Los Angeles as a young girl Betye learned sewing and quilting from her mother and grandmother she also witnessed Simon Rodia constructing The Watts Towers. These early influences served as a foundation for her assemblages.
Saar has a poetic way of addressing history and racial inequality. Her work is made up of discarded objects and salvaged domestic items which hold stories of oppression of race and gender, combining them into arrangements that create a conversation between the items and the viewer.
These interactions of the items brings new context and insight to problematic heirachy.
This portal’s color story inspired by her autobiographical assemblage from 1969 entitled Black Girl’s Window
