Portal for Barbara Hepworth
31” x 12”
hand wrapped fiber and ceramic
Born January 10, 1903.
Known for her Modernist monolithic forms Hepworth was small in stature and intense in appearance. While reserved in demeanor she held her own in art circles of mostly male contemporaries, although she never wished to be separately categorized as a woman artist.
A petite person capable of demanding physical work. She had great strength, physically and also possessed integrity of character
She created work for five decades working “direct carving” mode. A manner of sculpting wherein the artist engages directly with their materials, using a hammer and chisel. emphasized the artist’s hand, gesture, and individuality.
A deeply spiritual strand lay in her work merging human life with static material
She said “the strokes of the hammer on the chisel have to be in time with your heartbeat or pulse.”
This portal is part of a series
The Pussy Party
(Femme le Fête )
inspired by Judy Chicago's Dinner Party.
Each an homage to a women artist who has effected me andfueled the fires my creative path. Taking cues from Chicago's beautiful masterpiece honoring hundreds of women that changed the course of history with their contributions, many of which have gone virtually unrecognized for their accomplishments.
Each hand wrapped composition is created as a celebratory meditation of the feminine. Part of an ongoing series sprung from a deep appreciation for female makers, each one influential to her.
A portal for birthing ideas, a channel for conjuring. The meditative process of hand wrapping each one helps to ground and center. The gestures in the process of hand wrapping them mimic the cyclical repetition of breath, waves, or spirals.
Each one is created with a specific female artist in mind, drawing from the chosen artist’s palette to harness color stories that resonate. The bands of color resemble tree rings or sound waves.
Duality of strength & vulnerability, power & receptivity
